Hoy Hoy LaundroMuttans,
• Ode to Gravity
Do you want to hear the good news or the bad news
first? Ack. Nothing can jostle one's tranquility more off balance than
that question. Do you opt to hear the good news first, recognizing that
a dark cloud of unknown proportion looms directly ahead? Or do you clench
your teeth and listen to the unpalatable, initial communiqué, trusting
that it will be eclipsed by the subsequent revelation? Much like the nest
of Starling chicks in the bathroom vent here at LaundroMutt, life likes
to hurl the unexpected at us. And, as we routinely schlep the stepladder
outside to return the gravity-challenged avian progeny to their non-conforming
domicile, we acquiesce and move forward. The changes in daily life, good
and bad, keep it colorful. We sure hope those chicks change… because
they are one ugly lot.
• Now, which do you want first?
Last month we said goodbye to two members of the LaundroMutt family, Alana
and Cheryl.
Alana came to us not long after we opened LaundroMutt.
Dogs and humans alike bonded to her almost instantly; soon she had a following.
Over time Alana taught us many things beyond her grooming expertise: there
are infinite combinations of pink and brown, shades of hair color and
that wool hats are not just for cold weather anymore. However, she recently
heard the call of the Northwest, Bend, Oregon to be specific. As hard
as it was, we had to let her go. Moreover, I was informed that leg shackles,
tire slashing and/or Supergluing her in her grooming room were not legally
sound methods to prevent her from moving- at least in not in Massachusetts.
She will be missed.
Cheryl joined the LaundroMutt ranks nearly two years
ago. She started as just a part-timer and, as her tenure progressed, we
did not hesitate to elevate her to full-time staff member. With her bright
eyes, big smile and an attention to detail, Cheryl was on the scene. We
love to recount the afternoon when Cheryl spent over an hour and a half
removing ticks from a dog that spent an unsanctioned night in the woods.
The final count: over sixty ticks. We enjoy catching glimpses of her tooling
around the rotary in her white Mystery Van.
To every end there is a beginning. We would like to introduce Sam and
Kate (this is the good news part).
Sam is a LaundroMutt’s new, excellent groomer.
Groomer by day and oil painter/artist by night, Sam been grooming for
several years. Morevoer, he trained with Linda Kay, Master Groomer, and
later taught grooming for over a year. Sam and Alana worked together for
over a month at LaundroMutt; she gave him the “thumbs up.”
I would say that Sam has some big shoes to fill, but we all know Alana
has itty-bitty feet.
Kate joins us on the “floor” as our new
staff member. Much of her career has been canine-centric. Most recently
Kate worked at the MSPCA’s adoption center in Boston. In is not
uncommon that a pooch will trot into LaundroMutt, with its new family
in tow, who owes its good fortune to Kate and MSPCA. On a side note, it
is nice to have another person who can reach items on the top shelves
of the cabinets (read: Kate's tall).
• The Dirty Dog Community “Blog”
Cambridge. On June 10th, The
City of Cambridge will officially open the Pacific Street Dog Park. Obviously
this is a great step forward for dog and their owners. As we work with
the community and more off-leash space is opened for dogs, we will solve
the problem of long commutes to exercise our dogs and also the overuse
of the few current spaces. On a similar note, the final Fresh Pond Medallion
vote is coming soon. We will post the day and time on our home
page when the meeting is announced.
Lincoln. The 7th Annual Dog
Walk Paws in the Park will be held on June 10th at the John H. Pierce
House. Join many other dog lovers for a day filled with family and canine
fun while help to raise money for homeless dogs. Paws
in Park 2007.
Somerville. On June 14th,
there will be a Dog Owners Task Force meeting at the Mayor’s Office
for Strategic Planning and Community Development. The meeting will be
held at Somerville
City Hall at 6:30pm.
• Charity Events: Save the Date
