Lave Canem

Hello to all quadrupeds and bipeds,

• G'Day

The cherry, apple and red bud trees are creating an explosion of color, which is reflected in the smiles on everyone who graces our humble shop. Slowly, but surely, the populace is emerging from the winter repose. Neighbors are becoming reacquainted, as are our four legged friends. Spring is in the air. Let us enjoy all three days of it… for tomorrow it may turn hot, hazy and humid.

• Mark your Calendar

Come wind down from the workday on Thursday, May 12 for Yappy Hour at The Best Western Hotel Tria in Cambridge. The Hotel Tria is opening its doors to all canines and their people to hang out and socialize from 6pm to 8pm. There will be gift bags for all attendees and refreshments including wine and snacks available for purchase. There is a cover charge of $10 for this event, but we feel it is well worth it considering how few animal-friendly events there are in Greater Boston. LaundroMutt will be represented as well as Raining Cats & Dogs and Passaretti Photography, who will be taking Mother’s Day photographs with your pet. For directions and more information go to Hotel Tria.
On Thursday, May 19 there will be a fundraiser for Peter’s Park in the South End. For those of you not-in-the-know, Peter’s Park is a sanctioned off-leash dog park. This is a rarity in Greater Boston, especially within the Boston city limits. We need to protect these precious resources, even if we do not personally frequent them. The community has agreed to keep the park dog friendly only if they build a specific type of noise-reducing fence. Please help preserve this canine treasure in South End with your generosity. Contact The PolkaDog Bakery for more details about the fundraiser.

• BarkaLounge Events

On Wednesday May 25th, the LaundroMutt will be hosting its first lecture series with our guest lecturer Vera Wilkinson from 6pm to 8pm in the BarkaLounge. This is a great opportunity to learn about and brush-up on obedience training with your dog.

“Click What, How, When, Where and Why?”

Clicker training is relatively new to the dog-training world. It is not a fad however. It is science-based method of teaching and communicating with dogs. By reinforcing desirable behaviors rather than punishing undesirable ones, we develop stronger, more trusting relationships with our dogs. Dogs learn by association and become willing partners in the process. Given the differences in human and dog behavior, this is a good thing. Clicker training, as a method, embraces my commitment and philosophy to 'do no harm' in my work with dogs.
Many dog owners are uncomfortable with the physical corrections and collars used by traditional trainers and, as a result, never quite get the behavior they would prefer from their dogs. Likewise, many would-be-clicker-trainer dog owners do not fully understand this process. They find it confusing and complicated and, perhaps, to much work. Clicker training done properly is clear and uncomplicated and very exciting for both people and dogs. Come join us while Vera E. Wilkinson, a certified trainer, clarifies the use and application of clicker training in her work with dogs.

The lecture will be limited to 15 people and will be booked on a first-come basis. Please call to reserve a space as soon as possible. We ask that you leave your four-legged friends at home, as they may distract the “demo dog.” The cost will be $20 per person and will include pizza and refreshments.

• LaundroMutt Patio

It is amazing how well Astroturf can dress up our storefront. Every sunny Saturday and Sunday we now feature our “mobile patio.” At present, it is a modest set up complete with comfortable chairs, a table, “dog parking”, dog water and, of course, a beautiful section of Astroturf. It is a great place to sit, relax and watch the world drive by. If you walk in the back door and do not see us lurking about, we are probably out sunbathing in the chairs.

• Pick of the Month

Go Amish! We have just received our hand-made leather collars and leads. In the past, I had seen some fantastic leather collars and leads that were “made by an Amish harness maker.” So, I went on a quest to find this Amish person. After much searching and several trails gone cold, I finally located this elusive harness maker. So the Pick of the Month for May is our leather gear. We have two types of collars: Strap (straight) and Rolled. On top of that we have three different types of leads: Strap (straight), Strap with a Traffic Loop and a multi-function Police Lead. All the leather comes in both a rich brown and deep black. As a testimonial, I have seen an example of these leads close to ten years old- they become incredibly soft, yet they remain quite strong.
